Project Himalaya

The year 2002 has been observed by the United Nations as the International Year of Mountains. International Year Of Mountains is a celebration of mountain life, a springboard for long-term research and action to improve the well-being of mountain communities and the mountain environment. Several nations have made commitment to make the International Year Of Mountains 2002 by forming national committees and carrying out projects and activities reflecting and highlighting the needs and issues that confront the mountain ecology.

Today there is an increasing recognition and awareness of the importance of mountain eco-systems. About 26 percent of the world’s population dwells in or very close to mountain regions and provides crucial goods and services to more than half the world’s largest repositories of bio-diversity. They are popular destinations for recreation and tourism.

Thus IYM is being celebrated all over the world with the primary objectives of improving and ensuring the well-being of mountain communities through promoting the conservation and sustainable development of mountain region.

In this auspicious juncture and to be part of this grand celebration, “Project Himalaya”, thus takes birth in this part of world – “Nepal”.

Project Himalaya is a non-profit, service oriented, non-political and non-governmental organization (NGO). This NGO is committed for the welfare and development of society with special emphasis on disadvantaged groups (ethnic / indigenous) and weaker section (women, children, and disable) of mountain community by undertaking various need based and self-reliance development, availing the necessary opportunities in national level. Special emphasis is given to the women from marginalized communities such as ethnic, indigenous and Dalit (oppressed) are more vulnerable to trafficking, forced labour or slavery like practices. It is because of their lack of access to education and training programs and very limited employment opportunities. To address these issues of social inequality and economic disparities, Project Himalaya is aiming to undertake various activities on priority basis.
